The Greatest Canadian Film Ever Made?

Some say this is it. We shall see. I've just queued it up at position 191, followed by Bon Cop Bad Cop (hey, supposedly everyone in Canada loved it) so I'll let you all know what I think in about, oh, two and a half years. I should be getting around to My Winnipeg before then, hopefully. Stay tuned for a more in-depth post.

In the meantime, I welcome comments and suggestions -- if anyone out there has a favorite (or favourite) Canadian film, feel free to discuss. Or if anyone has any adamant opinions on what they consider to be "the greatest" Canadian film ever made, fire away.

A quick update: I want to vote for Le Confessionel though I haven't seen it since I was a very young undergrad, and tastes change, of course. I'd like to add The Saddest Music in the World to that, and finally, in third place, Strange Brew. For old time's sake.

I'm still accepting nominations.

I've always sort of thought that Canada did good TV and good TV movies, but generally sub-par films despite having a slew of great directors come out of it.

Having said that and with the caveat that I haven't really kept up with the newest classics of the motherland, I'll say that Jesus of Montreal is my favourite Canadian movie.

My knowledge of Canadian film is not deep enough to allow me to respond to this with much confidence. But I have enjoyed the films of Atom Egoyan, for instance. And David Cronenberg was of significant interest when I was younger. I haven't seen any of his recent films yet. Back in college I vaguely remember seeing this film that was supposed to be from some filmmaking community in Winnipeg. What was it about? Some kid lets a snake into the house? Or watches his neighbor get killed? What was that all about?

Looking forward to that 2010-early 2011 post on Mon Oncle Antoine.

Did you know you can max out your Netflix queue? Yes, you can. A friend informed me of this just to-day, in fact. The red envelope keepers cap us at 500 movies per queue. There goes my social life...

Umm...My Winnepeg (thankfully) was extended a week here in Chicago, so I will be viewing it this week as well. We'll compare notes soon!

So far we have Jesus of Montreal, some movie about a kid/neighbor/snake (possibly Leolo? though that was a kitten) and maybe My Winnipeg, pending viewing later this week.

Gotcha.

Also, saying your fave Canuck movie is "a Barenaked Ladies video" isn't funny.

Michael Snow's Wavelength and Cronenberg's Spider. Top notch, those two. I highly enjoy Guy Maddin, but I'm not quite ready to lift his films to that level. If I were to choose one I think I'd go with Cowards Bend the Knee.

Way to represent the avant-garde -- almost forgot about the Canadian-ness of Michael Snow.

Adding Spider to the queue right now!
